  • 29th March 2014 at 4.30pm KSPMC 1 resting on the road between Eeriyakkulam Pooval and Manikrala Uraniya. N 08.44028, E 079.99901.   It was lying on the road for about 7 minutes, stood up and walked passed the vehicle towards Eeriyakkulam Pooval. The left eye is still quite dark in colour. (With my wife Dilki Gunawardena, Dr. Srinath Seneviratne, Vasanta Seneviratne, Kissani Liyanage and guide podi Danushka).

  • 8th December 2013 at 4.41pm, KSPMC 1 at Manikkapola Uttu sandpatch. N 8.447810, E 79.983020
    I observed that its left eye was black indicating and injury. It walked from the sand patch in the direction of Kuruttupandi Villu but stopped for a few minutes as it approached a bend and sat on its hind quarters permitting me to take a few photos as it turned back once to look at the vehicles following him. The leopard appeared to have been interested in some thing beyond the bend. After a while it started to walk again and I pulled over to a side to permit the other vehicles to follow the leopard. I later found out that it had walked for about a 200 meters but had entered the forest due to one vehicle approaching it too close. ( with guide podi Danushka)

  • 30th March 2013- 3.40pm. KSPMC 1 & KSPMC 2 – at Panikkar Villu Uda Para. N 8.394717, E 79.954767
    I entered the road from the Comban side and was alerted by the alarm calls of the Grey Langurs. KSPMC 1 was seen on the open sand patch to the left of the road while KSPMC 2 was lying on the road ahead of me. The two leopards, though not together, were about 50 meters from each other. I photographed both. Upon the arrival of other vehicles, KSPMC 2 entered the forest but KSPMC 1 was quite relaxed, oblivious to the escalation of vehicles and the noise. It would look in the direction of the vehicles, roll over and sleep with its back to the vehicles. At 4.35pm I left the leopard and drove towards Combansanchi Pooval. (With guide Danushka)

  • 23rd February 2013 - 2.23pm. We were driving from the Combansanchi Pooval sand patch towards Panikkar Villu. N 8.391617, E 79.950900
    KSPMC 1 was lying on the road about 100 meters beyond the sand patch. It got up to enter the forest upon our approach but settled down with my turning off the engine and lay down on the road again. It was lying for about 15 minutes. When I reversed the vehicle it got up and entered the forest and slept at the foot of a tree about 15 yards inside the forest. (With guide Saranga)

  • 2nd September 2012 at 12.30pm. As we arrived, a leopard ran across the Combansanchi Pooval waterhole only a few feet from our vehicle and started to drink. It was KSPMC 1. After a while, a male Indian Peafowl came to the waterhole and the subadult leopard just ran towards the bird without stalking it, allowing the bird to get away without too much trouble.   • 2nd September 2012 at 9.15am. We parked the vehicle at the Combansanchi Pooval waterhole. N 8.386433, E 79.950933
    While having breakfast, we heard the "kak, kako cac" alarm calls of the Grey Langurs. Within a few minutes KSPMC 1 walked to the edge of the waterhole and drank for about ten minutes. (With guide Saranga)

  • 17th July 2012 at 3.55 – 5.15pm. One subadult male leopard at Combansanchi Pooval. N 8.387833, E 79.950967
    It was resting on an earth bund in the reeds and was hardly visible. Upon us stopping the vehicle, it walked towards the vehicle. We reversed and parked beyond the culvert where the road takes a right angled bend. The leopard came on to the road, walked towards the vehicle and settled down on the culvert about 20 yards from us. Then it walked even closer and moved into the opening to the right of us. It licked its paws thoroughly, played with its tail and picked up a small grass tussock in its mouth. After a while it moved into the forest. We drove towards Thala Wila and upon our return saw it again at the open sandy area close to where it was earlier. This was my first sighting of this leopard and I named it KSPMC 1. I estimated its age to be about 10-12 months. (With Nanda Senanayake and guide Danushka)
