Dragonflies ‹‹ Go Back

Common Name : Adam´s Gem     -       Scientific Name : Libellago adami
Wilpattu

This is the most widespread of our four species of dragonflies which belong to the family “Chlorocyphidae”. Four species of this family are recorded from the island, and they are commonly referred to as “Jewels or Gems”. All four members are endemic to the island.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as “Vulnerable” (National Red List 2012).

This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

This species is found in rivers and canals both in the wet and dry lowlands of the country. This is not a common species in Wilpattu. I observed this species during a Crocodile survey that was conducted in October 2015 at Gange Wadiya and Kala Oya.
