Six species of cat snakes are found in the country with two endemic species. Other than in Sri Lanka this species of cat snake is found only in the Western Ghats in India.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as Near Threatened (National Red List 2012).
This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
This mildly venomous species is known to occur in the dry lowlands, the wet zone and up to about 450meters in the hills.
This is an uncommon species, which closely resembles the common Sri Lanka Cat Snake. It feeds mostly on Geckos, Skinks and small lizards.
In Wilpattu I found this species at Hunuwilagama just outside the park and released it inside the park.
