This small damselfly belongs to the Coenagrionidae family commonly referred to as “Bluets” and is found mainly in the lowlands but ascends to about 2100 meters in the hills. This insect inhabits both the wet and dry zone areas of the island. Globally it is found from Africa through the middle east to Southern and Eastern Asia.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as “Least Concerned” (National Red List 2012).
This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
In Wilpattu this species can be seen at most suitable locations and is quite common around Kaali Villu where I managed to get a few images.
