This is an arboreal species endemic to the country and is commonly found also around human habitations in the wet as well as the dry zone. The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (IUCN Red List) and it is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
I have observed this species in most dry zone National Parks at night as well as at Belihuloya. In the hills it is known to occur up to an altitude of 1500 meters.
In Wilpattu this species can sometimes be observed in and around the park bungalows.
