This is one of the most common breeding residents in the country. Its native to Iran, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afganistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indo-china and China.
Upon being introduced this species have now become naturalized in many countries such as Australia and Canada. It is considered as one of the worst 100 invasive species in the world.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (National Red List 2012).
This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
This species is found through out the island and some times out of the breeding season forms in to large flocks.
This is a very common species at Wilpattu.
