This is a very common species in the low country. The subspecies E.c.lankae is endemic to Sri Lanka. This species is also found in India, Bangladesh, Maldives and Nepal.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (National Red List 2012).
This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
I have photographed this species at Thalei Mannar, Hantana, Ritigala and Arankele. I remember this species at out home garden at Colombo 10 in the early 1980’s. This is a very common species found in the low country dry zone. The highest altitude I have seen it so far has been at Hantana at 780 meters.
This is a seldom seen species in Wilpattu. I have seen it at Eluwankulam, Panikkar Villu, Kumbuk Wila, Lunu Wila and Eriyakkulampooval.
