This long-legged dragonfly belongs to the Libellulidae family commonly referred to as “Chasers” and frequents the water bodies and streams of the lowlands. It has a wide geographical distribution from Iran across the Indian subcontinent up to Indonesia.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as “Near Threatened” (National Red List 2012).
This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
This is not a common dragonfly at Wilpattu but can be seen in fair numbers around the villus throughout the park. I have photographed it at Kaali Villu and Eriyakkulampooval.
