This strikingly beautiful dragonfly fly belongs to the Libellulidae family commonly referred to as “Chasers” and can be seen all over the island except for the highest hills. It is also a common species in most countries in the Indian subcontinent and southeast Asia.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as “Least Concerned” (National Red List 2012).

This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

The best time to photograph them would be between 6.30am and 7.30am where the sunlight is not too harsh and the coloureful males will perch on twigs and grass blades with their abdomens held vertically upright. The females are ochreous with brownish patches at the base of the wings.

This is a very common species in Wilpattu and can be seen around the villus and other water bodies.
