As implied by their name the fruit bodies of this genus are gelatinous or rubbery in texture. Twenty-two subspecies have been recognized. These often spoon shaped mushrooms belong to the Dacremycetaceae family and often will grow on decaying wood. They are widely distributed in Asia, Africa, Australia, north and south America but does not occur in Europe.
This is an edible fungus and is commercially grown to be used as an additive in the food industry.
In Wilpattu I have observed this species at Downhall Pitiya during the month of October.
