This is a small Lycaenidae butterfly found in the dry lowlands. It is found throughout India up to Australia.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as “Least Concerned” (National Red List 2012).
This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
I have seen this species at many locations including the giant’s tank at Murunkan. The Gram Blue lays its eggs on many native as well as introduced species such as Jequirity Bean “Olinda” Abrus precatorius, Phasey Bean Macroptilium lathyroides, Beach Pea “Karal Li Ma” Vigna marina, Mung Bean “Mung Eta” Vigna radiata, Jungle Mat Bean “Mung Wanna” Vigna trilobata, Cowpeas “Polong Me” Vigna unguiculata and Sword Bean “Mudu Avara” Canavalia rosea.
This is not a commonly seen species in Wilpattu but it occurs throughout the park.
