The blue iridescent circles on a black background of the inner wings of the male of this Nymphalidae species makes it a striking butterfly. The females are mostly brown in coloure and mimic other species such as the crows for their protection. This species can be seen throughout the country. Globally it is found from Madagascar through whole of Asia to Australia.

The conservation of this species is regarded as “Least Concerned” (National Red List 2012).

This is a species protected under the Fauna & Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No.22 of 2009.

I have seen this species at most forested areas throughout the country. On a few occasions I have also seen it at our home garden at Colombo 08. The females of this species mimic the females of the poisonous species such as the Mime and Crows. The host plants where the females of this species lay their eggs include “Hulanthala” Ageratum conyzoidea, “Wel Babila” Sida cordata, “Koti Kan Babila” Sida rhombifolia and “Appala” Urena obata. The males will perch on leaves about 15 to 20 feet above ground and would chase away any other butterfly or dragonfly that ventures into his territory.

This is a common species in and around Wilpattu and can often be seen during the game drives.
