This is very likely our commonest dragonfly species found throughout the country except the highest hills and belongs to the Libellulidae family commonly referred to as “Chasers”. Other than in Sri Lanka this species is also native to south-eastern Europe, North Africa, whole of Asia up to Japan and to Australia.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as “Least Concerned” (National Red List 2012).

This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

This large skimmer with a unique bulge at the base of its abdomen is a voracious predator of many species of small insects including smaller butterflies and damselflies. It is very common in Wilpattu and can be seen throughout the park.
