This is an uncommon winter migrant to the lowlands. It is found across South and Southeast Asia.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (IUCN Red List) and it is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
I have seen this species mainly in the dry lowlands including Udawalawa National Park and Yala National Park. In the wet zone I have seen it at Meethirigala Forest.
In Wilpattu Grey Drongo can be commonly seen during the migrant season and can be often seen in the company of small mixed feeding flocks. It is however a difficult bird to photograph due to its colour and as it is usually found in well-wooded forested areas.
