This is an uncommon migrant raptor, which is usually seen in the hills. It breeds in the Himalayas and Western China.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (IUCN Red List) and it is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
I have seen this species on a few occasions at Horton Plains National Park where it can be usually seen during the migrant season. In the lowlands I have seen it at Mannar, Arippu and Wilpattu National Park.
I have seen this species only once at Wilpattu in December 2011 at Mollikulama
