This is a liana, which is native to India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. The fruits, which become scarlet in colour when ripe, are quite striking.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned. (National List 2012).

In Ayurveda medicine the bark and wood of this species is used to treat boils and ulcers. Oil extracted from the roots is applied to swellings and a decoction made from the roots is used in the treatment of Syphilis.

In Wilpattu this is a very common species around the sandy soils around most villus such as Kudapatessa, Kuruttupandi Villu and Panikkar Villu. I have observed the endemic Ceylon Grey Hornbills feeding on the ripe fruits of this species.
