This is a species, which is not as common as the Large or the little egret. I have seen it in water bodies, marshes and paddy fields in the dry lowlands, the wet zone as well as in the hill country. The highest altitude at which I have seen it has been at the lake Gregory at Nuwaraeliya at an altitude of 1820meters.
It is not uncommon in Wilpattu and can be seen at most water bodies through out the year.
