This is a small shrub of the citrus family which grows up to about five to six feet in height. It occupies the shady understory of the dry lowland forests. The berries produced by this species are edible. Other than in Sri Lanka this species is found in the Indian subcontinent up to Hainan in China.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as “Least Concerned” (National Red list 2020).

The Common Mormon, which is butterfly species common in Wilpattu lays eggs on this species which is found throughout the park. These shrubs start flowering during the month of April and produce beautiful pink berries in June, July, August, September, October and November. Many species of birds and mammals feed on these succulent berries.
