This is one of our most common dragonfly species found throughout the lowlands and ascends the hills up to Nuwara Eliya where it is often seen around lake Gregory. This beautiful insect with orange-coloured wings belongs to the Libellulidae family commonly referred to as “Chasers” and is also native to India, Nepal, China, Japan Indonesia and the Philippines.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as “Least Concerned” (National Red List 2012).
This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
This fast-flying dragonfly preys on many species of insects including small butterflies and damselflies.
This species is quite common in Wilpattu and can be found in all suitable locations in and around the park.
