This is a plant in the water hyacinth family and is found through out Asia, Australia, China and tropical Africa.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned. (National List 2012).
The leaves of this plant are used for human consumption as a vegetable and it is used to treat toothache, asthma, fever and stomach ache. The leaves are also used to treat cattle with diarrhoea and to feed pigs and ducks.
This is a common species in Wilpattu and can be found at most water bodies.
