This dragonfly fly species found throughout the low country and belongs to the Libellulidae family commonly referred to as “Chasers”. It is usually seen on the edges of paddy fields and has the habit of fluttering among the grass which has resulted in its very apt name. This is a widespread species in most Asian countries. Four subspecies have been recognized with the nominate race N.i. intermedia is found in Sri Lanka, India, Napal and Bangladesh.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as “Least Concerned” (National Red List 2012).
This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
This is a common species found throughout the park and in paddy fields found in the buffer zone areas of the park. I have photographed it at Maila Wewa.
