This is a rare subspecies of the Brown Shrike Lanius cristatus cristatus, which is a very common migrant to the country. The Philippine Shrike breeds in Korea and Eastern China, and winters primarily in Taiwan and the Philippines.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (IUCN Red List).
This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
The Philippine Shrike is rarely recorded but as in the case with the Brown Shrike may occur throughout the country. I have seen this rare species at Bandarawela and at Udawalawa.
In November 2017 I was thrilled to observe one of these birds at Maradanmaduwa at Wilpattu, which is my only record of this species so far from the park.
