The pied colouration of this slow flying dragonfly makes it easy to identify as it flutters above paddy fields and marshlands. This species is common in the lowlands but is scares in the hills and the northern and northeastern parts of the country. It belongs to the Libellulidae family commonly referred to as “Chasers”. The Pied Parasol is found in south and southeastern Asia.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as “Least Concerned” (National Red List 2012).
TThis is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
The nominate race N.t. tullia occurs in the island with Indonesia having a separate subspecies.
This is a common species in and around Wilpattu and often can be seen close to the paddy fields bordering the park.
