This is a species, which is wide spread in Tropical Asia, South Africa, Australia, and Tropical Africa. It has been introduced to America and now naturalized in the tropical regions of the country.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned.

In Ayurveda medicine this plant is used to treat many gastrointestinal deceases. In Sri Lanka the chopped leaves are applied on abscesses to provide relief from pain and swelling.
In Wilpattu I have seen these plants in bloom between Kumutu Villu and Kanjuran Villu during the month of February.
