This is an endemic species found both in the wet and dry lowlands up to an altitude of about 500 meters.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (National Red List 2012).
This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
This is a species, which is found near fresh water bodies. Filling up of marshy land and the remaining freshwater bodies being exposed to higher degree of pollution has resulted in a vast habitat loss for this species. In the dry zone how ever it can be commonly found near most fresh water bodies.
In Wilpattu I have observed this species at Eluwankulama, Hunuwilagama and Radagama.
