This is a common breeding resident in the dry lowlands. The wet lowlands and the adjacent mid hills are occupied by the White-vented Drongo D.c leucopygialias. This species if found through out the Indian subcontinent.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (National Red List 2012).
This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
I have seen this species through out the dry zone in cities and forested areas. In the north this species is replaced by its cousin the Black Drongo Dicrurus macrocercus. It’s quite interesting that in and around the Hunuwilagama entrance of Wilpattu national park both the Black and the White-bellied occurs in reasonable numbers.
This is a common species seen in and around the park in fair numbers.
